Abstract

The aim of this study was to characterize the traditional knowledge associated with Vitis tiliifolia in Nahua communities of the Sierra de Zongolica, Veracruz, focusing on local identification, uses, management, and cultural value. The research followed a qualitative approach and was conducted in five localities through semi-structured interviews supported by snowball sampling. The instrument made it possible to document local names, ecological recognition patterns, forms of use, and meanings attributed to the species in everyday community life. Results indicate that ripe fruits are valued for their taste and used for direct consumption as well as for the preparation of juices, atoles, artisanal wines, liqueurs, and infusions. Recorded uses were concentrated in the food category (50%), followed by agroindustrial (28%), medicinal (13%), and cultural (9%) uses. The species was also linked to rituals and handicrafts, which expands its relevance beyond food use. The discussion places Vitis tiliifolia as a strategic biocultural resource whose continuity is connected with community memory, local heritage, and territorial use potential. The study concludes that this species constitutes a reservoir of traditional knowledge with food, cultural, and productive value, relevant for future conservation and regional valorization strategies.
